With Valentine’s Day falling smackdab in the middle of the month, February is known as a time for love. That’s why the Office of Advancement at Western Carolina University is rolling out the second annual “I Love WCU” fundraising campaign throughout the month.
Western Carolina University will offer an Occupational Safety and Health Administration 30-Hour Construction Industry Safety Training program Tuesday, Feb. 20, through Friday, Feb. 23, at the university’s instructional site at Biltmore Park Town Square in Asheville.

University of North Carolina System President Margaret Spellings announced Tuesday, Nov. 28, the naming of Provost Alison Morrison-Shetlar as acting chancellor of Western Carolina University. The very next day, Carol Burton, WCU’s associate provost for undergraduate studies, agreed to step into Morrison-Shetlar’s shoes by taking the role of acting provost.
Three Western Carolina University alumni were recognized for their achievements and a former chair of the WCU Board of Trustees received one of the highest honors bestowed by the university, the Distinguished Service Award, as part of Homecoming activities on campus.
As a kid with a vivid imagination and a self-admitted “class clown” while attending Fairview Elementary School in Sylva, perhaps Sean Bridgers should have known he had the ingredients to become an actor. Acting wasn’t something Bridgers ever really thought about – not until he left, then returned to Jackson County to enroll at Western Carolina University.
