The Western Carolina University School of Music will present a “Chamber Music with Friends” concert on Tuesday, Jan. 31, featuring Shannon Thompson, associate professor of music and clarinetist, who is celebrating her 20th year at WCU.
The 7:30 p.m. performance will be held in the recital hall of the Coulter Building on the WCU campus. It is free and open to the public.
She will be joined by fellow faculty members Lillian Buss Pearson on piano; Eldred Spell on flute; John West on saxophone; Will Peebles on bassoon; Brad Ulrich on trumpet; Zsolt Szabo on trombone; and percussionist Mario Gaetano on marimba. Performances will include Debussy’s “Petite Suite,” two tangos by Astor Piazzolla, a suite of Spanish pieces, a Klezmer-influenced trio and the premiere of “Escapade for Clarinet and Trombone,” by local composer Bryan Burkett.
In addition to music instruction at WCU, Thompson is the principal clarinetist of the Hendersonville Symphony and the bass clarinetist of the Asheville Symphony, and also on the faculty of the InterHarmony International Music Festival in Italy.
